Vitality - The Origin Of Being.Part Four
Surprised by God's solemn and explicit warning about death, Adam and Eve reflected on the coincidence of their chance meetings with the friendly snake; meetings that were often in the vicinity of the tree in the centre of the garden. Alerted by the coincidence they decided to test the snake when next they met to see if there were any ulterior motives behind it's congenial interest in them. They did not have long to wait as Satan, anticipating a quick result from his efforts so far, lay in wait for them near the tree. With a gentle hiss he greeted them warmly, only to be met with cautious and inquiring eyes. At once, Satan was aware that they were suspicious of his intentions. Frustrated, he subtly withdrew on the pretence that he was on his way to other interesting locations. By this quick and cunning manoeuvre he effectively tranquilized their fears, at least for the moment, but he knew the situation called for long term delaying tactics which could allay their caution and lull them into complacency. He was, however, faced with a dilemma. For although delaying tactics were needed, he could not delay for too long; his strength was now waning due to all the energy he was expending in pursuing and deceiving them. As a parasite his need for hosts was becoming critical and his position as the leader of the revolt against God precarious. This state of affairs was inevitable because from the moment he and the angels who followed him were expelled from the Kingdom of God's radiant vitality their spiritual vigour had begun to drain away. As Lucifer he had been the most powerful angel and now as Satan, the parasitical rebel and leader, he began scavenging on the lesser angels reserves of strength in an attempt to maintain his dominance. It was obvious to him that they were all doomed to oblivion unless he could quickly deceive Adam and Eve, and subsequently their offspring, into being his hosts. To the lesser angels this was not so clear, for their powers were being ravaged by him to the degree that they were becoming exhausted, and they planned to revolt against him before it was too late. Faced with this confrontation Satan disclosed to the most powerful of the lesser angels his plans to corrupt God's offspring and he assured them that they would be restored to their original vigour once he had achieved his goal. He did not, however, mention his current setback. Convinced of the prospects the angels he confided in agreed to rally around him and quash any revolt, but they emphasized that their powers of restraint were not strong - time was running out. Satan, in desperation, went back over his past manoeuvres to try and find a way to overcome Adam and Eve's caution and suspicion. One thing stood out - vanity. But had he achieved enough in this area? Were they as yet possessed of sufficient vanity to question God's reasons for raising the solemn subject of death? The answer was most likely no, and it was obvious that to try and flatter them at this stage would only increase their suspicions. He had only one option left and that was to stimulate their curiosity with a jest that would challenge their vanity and reinforce it.
