Maxim RevisionThankfulness, and appreciation, as opposed to self-interest. This weeks maxims feature the struggle that can arise between a desire to be truly thankful and the instincts of self-interest and self-preservation. It is worth noting that the word 'self' and its compounds, such as self-assured, self-opinionated etc, occur as many as 94 times in the dictionary, a number which exceeds most other words. Christ understood the strong instincts of self-preservation when He said, "Do unto others as you would have others do unto you." The following maxims bring to light the serious consequences which can develop by what God has described in one of the maxims as being overly enthused by self-interest. In other words it is difficult to be truly grateful or appreciative if you are blinded by self-interest and self-preservation. "Over preoccupation with self hinders the desire to be truly thankful." "When did you last say thankyou to your parents?" "Gratitude begins at home." "Gratitude is a virtue that encourages forgiveness." "The world is at war, a vile war, because too few and less and less of My children say thankyou to Me and mean it." "Touched by grace for being thankful. A measure of achievement." "Greed and uncontrolled self-interest are blood brothers and the birthplace of social viruses." "Generosity is not just a giving but a control of ones desire to put self-interest before all other considerations." "The framework of a robust society is generous responsibility across all cultures." "To kerb an inclination to sin is, from a social perspective, to act not only responsibly but generously." "Put aside all jealousy and be thankful to Me for all the gifts I have given and have in store for you. In that satisfaction you will be eternally successful, happy and fulfilled." "Impatience is a sign of mistrust in God and is often the result of being overly enthused by self-interest." "To have an understanding of social generosity is to comprehend an essential element of the nature of the kingdom of Heaven."
